Core Concepts
Kingdom
Kingdom is the highest level of classification. There are six kingdoms: Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Chromista, and Monera.
Phylum
Phylum is the level of classification below the kingdom. It is a group of related classes.
Class
Class is the level of classification below the phylum. It is a group of related orders.
Order
Order is the level of classification below the class. It is a group of related families.
Family
Family is the level of classification below the order. It is a group of related genera.
Genus
Genus is the level of classification below the family. It is a group of related species.
Species
Species is the lowest level of classification. It is a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Shortcut Formula / Trick
One trick to remember the order of the levels of classification is to use the sentence "Some Genera Have Incredible Names" (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species).
Trap Questions / Exceptions
- Wrong answer: Kingdom is the lowest level of classification. Right answer: Species is the lowest level of classification. Why students get it wrong: Students often get confused between the different levels of classification and may think that kingdom is the lowest level.
- Wrong answer: Phylum is a group of related species. Right answer: Phylum is a group of related classes. Why students get it wrong: Students may think that phylum is a group of related species, but it is actually a group of related classes.
- Wrong answer: Family is the highest level of classification. Right answer: Kingdom is the highest level of classification. Why students get it wrong: Students may think that family is the highest level of classification, but it is actually the level below the order.
